40 parents attended a Suring School Board Meeting following reports of a “student strip search” as teacher hunting for evidence of vaping. The member of staff was looking for e-cigs after she received reports of vaping on the school grounds. The amazing over-reaction provoked outrage from the parents of the six students and others who were also concerned about this ridiculous abuse of authority.
District Superintendent Kelly Capser is reported to have approved of the strip searches, overseen them, and assisted in some of them in conjunction with a female school nurse and a female police officer.
One mother told the Suring School Board: “We are here and we are watching. We are here because we know our rights as parents and citizens of this town. And we are here because no one is above the law.”
With emotion cracking through her voice, she continued: “There’s been unspeakable things done to our children. Actions no child should ever have to endure. Our kids are terrified to come here. School is supposed to be a safe place – sometimes the only safe place they have, and it’s been taken from them.
“I am at this point appalled that I send my children here. So, what I’m saying to the parents is how many of you, if things don’t change in this school, are willing to unroll your children?”
Following a large number of parents standing up, the mother pointed out how bad this was for the school and how it would have ramifications for all of the school’s clubs and societies.
“Us as a community, we’re not going away. We’re going to make sure that something is done. If this was any other business this would not be tolerated. The person that did it would be on suspension and placed under investigation – so why is that not the case?
“They have been violated beyond belief. This is supposed to be their safe place.”
Another parent told the local paper: “She was taken into a room and gave them her vape and the superintendent told her that she was going to strip search her anyway. She stripped her down to her bra and underwear and had her pull her bra out and looked down there to make sure there was nothing there. I was informed hours later that it was done and that she would receive an in-school suspension.”
Chillingly, the words of another parent rang around the room: “Kids are getting pushed and pushed and you cannot mess with these children’s mental health. When we have a child commit suicide, it is going to be on you know who hands.”
The District Attorney’s Office has said the searches did not meet the definition of a strip search as the students were only instructed to remove all their clothes except their underwear. The school board has scheduled its next meeting for 2nd March and is not set to make comment until then.
America’s war on vaping is constantly being championed by those who claim they are doing it ‘for the kids’. Many will question where this madness is leading and when it will stop.
