The GFN conference is the only international conference to focus on the role of safer nicotine products (including e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, snus, and heated tobacco products) that help people switch from smoking.
Organisers say: “The rapid development and use of safer nicotine products raises a number of challenging scientific questions about their safety, who uses them and why, and the impact on smoking. These products also raise challenges for governments who seek to understand what kind of policy and regulation is appropriate. The GFN examines the rapidly developing science in relation to nicotine and its use, including policy and regulatory responses.”
In providing a forum for international experts, advocates, and thought leaders on safer nicotine products and their role in reducing harm, GFN has announced veteran reporter Marc Gunther, former senior writer at Fortune magazine from 1996 to 2008, as the first of three keynote speakers.
Marc previously worked at The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian. In 2015, he began focusing on foundations, non-profits and global poverty at his blog, Non-profit Chronicles and at Medium, where he’s also explored drug policy and psychedelic medicines.
Marc explains how he became interested in vaping and tobacco harm reduction in 2020: “I began a deep dive into a campaign against electronic cigarettes funded by a $160-million, three-year grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies. I was surprised and troubled by what I learned.”
The GFN organisers add: “After his initial in-depth analysis in the Chronicle of Philanthropy (March 2021), Marc has gone on to publish widely on the influence of philanthropy on tobacco control and tobacco harm reduction, reflecting on bigger issues about public interest groups and NGOs and peer-reviewed science. At #GFN22, Marc will be discussing all this and more in the first keynote of the event: The unchecked power of philanthropy.”
Marc’s recent investigation: Michael Bloomberg loves data. Except when he doesn’t.
The organisers previously said: ““Our theme for 2022 is an optimistic one: Tobacco harm reduction - here for good. The Global Forum on Nicotine is the only conference where all stakeholders are welcomed - we are open to everyone.”
Registration for tickets is now open. The conference is offering four rates: local and consumer advocates, academic/public sector/NGOs, SMEs and industry/consultants. Discounted room rates are available at the Marriott Warsaw but are only guaranteed until 13 May 2022. Livestreaming will be taking place but will not cover all conference sessions.\
