From the 16th of November 2020 the price of cigarettes and rolling tobacco will soar
Despite the Autumn budget not taking place this year, it hasn’t stopped the Government from announcing a shock tobacco duty hike.
A statement from Jesse Norman, The Financial Secretary to the Treasury outlined the Governments plans that fall in line with the smoke free 2030 plans.
“The Government is announcing the uprating of tobacco duties to protect the public finances, continue the drive to reduce smoking prevalence, and support the Government’s target for a smoke-free England by 2030. In line with the existing escalator, duty rates on all tobacco products will increase by RPI + 2%. In order to narrow the gap between hand-rolling tobacco (HRT) and cigarette duty rates and ensure the Minimum Excise Tax (MET) continues to be effective in the current market, HRT will increase by RPI + 6% and the MET by RPI + 4%. The Treasury is laying an Order before the House to enact these changes, which will take effect on 16 November.”

What does this mean? It means that from the 16th of November 2020 the price of cigarettes and rolling tobacco will jump and smokers will start to feel the pinch.
With this news it is likely that even more smokers will be making the life changing decision to quit the habit. But what route will smokers take? While we recently reported the good news that e-cigarettes are 70% more effective than NRTs when it comes to smokers quitting, we also reported the bad news that the public perception of vaping is now worse.
Thanks to misleading and irresponsible media reporting, some smokers now believe that vaping is worse for you than smoking.
What smoking cessation experts say
Deborah Arnott, Chief Executive of ASH said:
“About a third of smokers have never even tried an e-cigarette and less than 20% are currently using one. If many more smokers could be encouraged to give e-cigarettes a go, the latest evidence indicates that many more might successfully quit.
Health professionals have an important role to play. They can give smokers the confidence to try an e-cigarette, by letting them know that they can help them manage cravings and that they are a much safer alternative than continuing to smoke.”
